Pedestrian killed in Broad St. hit & run; Police: Driver ID’d

Nina A. Dever, 71, of Glens Falls, was struck by a motor vehicle on Broad Street near South Western Avenue Sunday morning, Feb. 6. She was pronounced dead at Glens Falls Hospital.

Glens Falls Police said they responded at 5:45 a.m. to a report of a motor vehicle crash and were advised that a female had been struck by a vehicle and that the vehicle left the scene. She was walking in the roadway on the side of the eastbound lane at the time of the incident, they said.

“The driver of the motor vehicle who struck the victim has been identified but the name of the driver is being withheld at this time as the investigation is still ongoing,” Glens Falls Police said Monday.

“The vehicle was located and has been secured. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.” Anyone with information, contact City Police at 761-3840.

A Gofundme to help Nina’s sister Sue Joiner with the funeral was launched by Colin Studenroth, who said he is Sue’s neighbor, raised $13,524 as of Tuesday.

Mr. Studenroth wrote about the sisters, “You have probably seen the pair walking all over Glens Falls and Queensbury in matching cat hats and pink jackets. The sisters lived together with the cats they love and did everything as a team…They are both well into retirement age and got by on social security. Sue will need help paying for Nina’s services and taking care of their cats.”

2 die in Northway crash: Stony Creek man trying to help

David H. Johnson, 54, of Stony Creek and Jesica B. Dorronsoro, 28, of Halfmoon died early Sunday morning in a Northway multi-car accident in Malta.

State Police said that they responded to the accident at approximately 3:49 a.m.

Preliminary investigation determined that Fred Baxtrome, 59, of Fort Edward was traveling in the center lane of I-87 south in a 2016 Honda SUV when he was struck from behind by a 2018 Buick SUV operated by Ms. Dorronsoro.

Ms. Dorronsoro lost control of her vehicle, crossed the median, and came to rest in the center lane of I-87 northbound.

Passing motorist Mr. Johnson stopped to assist her.

Both Ms. Dorronsoro and Mr. Johnson were standing behind Ms. Dorronsoro’s vehicle when they were struck by a northbound box truck operated by Jennifer Aidoo, 34, of New Britain, CT., police said.

Ms. Dorronsoro and Mr. Johnson were declared deceased at the scene. Ms. Aidoo was not injured in the collision. Two of Mr. Baxtrome’s passengers were transported to Saratoga Hospital for evaluation.

Queensbury School mourns death of ‘beloved teacher’ and coach Michelle Bennett

“It is with a very heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of our beloved teacher, Mrs. Michelle Bennett,” the Queensbury Union Free School District posted on its website, Saturday, Feb. 5.

“Michelle was a pillar of the Queensbury Middle School community for 22 years as an English department chairperson and ELA teacher.

“Michelle was invested in the lives of our school community, as a dedicated educator and coach.

“This is a devastating loss for our community. Michelle cared about each and every one of her students and colleagues,” wrote Superintendent Kyle Gannon. “She was passionate about helping children and she truly loved teaching ELA.”

He wrote, “I feel for our staff members, our students, and our athletes who were lucky enough to know her. She has touched thousands of lives over these past 22 years.”

A Gofundme effort “In Loving memory of Michelle Bennett” to help the family with expenses raised $17,662 of its $10,000 goal in 18 hours.

The district message continued, “Our thoughts are with Michelle’s family and the Queensbury community at this time.

“In difficult times like these, our crisis teams assemble to support all of our students, faculty, and staff.

The school said counselors, school psychologists and social workers are available for students who need support.
