Battenkill wins best milk in NY; Nettle Meadow, Argyle Farm win cheese & yogurt

The Battenkill Valley Creamery in Salem won the Gold Medal in the fluid milk category at the New York State Fair’s Dairy Products Competition, Governor Cuomo announced Monday.

In cheese categories, the Argyle Cheese Farmer in Washington County and Nettle Meadow in the Warren County Town of Thurman also won Gold.

Seth McEachron’s Battenkill Creamery, which also won the award in 2010, scored a perfect 100, based on flavor, shelf life, butterfat percentage and freezing point.

Mr. McEachron said that in the 20-year history of the competition, only four perfect scores have been recorded. Stewart’s tied for second-place in fluid milk, with a 98.0 score, tied with Garelick Farms.

Argyle Cheese Farmer, owned by Marge and Dave Randles, took Gold in Flavored Yogurt with its Chocolate Greek Yogurt, recording a 98.0 score.

They also won Silver in Farmstead/Artisan’s Cow’s Milk Hard Cheese, with their Aged Cheese, 97.5 score.

Nettle Meadow, owned by Sheila Flanagan and Lorraine Lambiase, won Gold in the Goat/Sheep Hard Cheese category, with their Ale Washed Cheese 98.5.

They took Silver in Goat/Sheep Soft Cheese, with their Bloomy Rind, 98.0.
