“The Award recognizes individuals, couples or organizations who have demonstrated the values and legacy of Library founder Henry Crandall (1821-1913) and his wife, Betsy (1833-1914) through true acts of the American Spirit including generosity, perseverance, loyalty, compassion, civic pride and philanthropy,” said the library press release.

“From my perspective,” wrote Library Director Kathy Naftaly, “John and I are both fortunate, as we’ve spent our careers in the ‘smile’ business. John, with his wife Pat at his side as his office manager, spent his career fine-tuning the grins of his patients. I’ve spent my career working with a smiling Library staff whose interactions create beaming patrons…”

“John and Pat have annually supported our endeavors through their generosity. John’s respect from our community made his efforts on the Library’s ‘Continue the Legend’ Initiative (2005-2008 renovation and expansion) particularly effective.”

The Schutzes’ have also supported many other community efforts including Boy Scouts of America, Lake George Opera Festival, Tri-County United Way, Glens Falls YMCA, Glens Falls Chamber of Commerce, Queensbury Business Association, Glens Falls Rotary Club, Glens Falls Hospital Foundation, Open Door’s Building Campaign and the Hyde Collection Museum, said the press release.

Dr. Schutze was quoted: “We came to Glens Falls fifty years ago, Pat got us involved with the ‘Welcome Wagon’ organization to help us get to know the community…Although my name appears on many of the organizations, it was actually my wife’s support in the background that allowed me to have the freedom to participate in our community.”

The Nov. 15 dinner at the Park Theater starts at 5:30 p.m. The library said, “The $130 reservation fee includes hors d’oeuvres, classic music, a seated dinner, and a fun trivia/game show experience with Tim Sokol.” Tickets will be sold between Sept. 30 and Oct. 30 through the library website and at the library customer service desk. “If you would like to sponsor or be a member of the honorary committee, please call Kathy Naftaly at 518-792-6508, ex 288.”

The event aims to raise more than $40,000 in support of the programs and services that promote literacy, provide educational opportunities, and expand cultural horizons for area residents.
