Pete & Debbie Smith close their East Cove

By David Cederstrom, Chronicle Staff Writer

After 48 years in business, Pete and Debbie Smith closed as of April 16 their East Cove Restaurant on Route 9L just east of Lake George Village.

Mrs. Smith tells The Chronicle that sale of the restaurant to the owners of the nearby Garrison Bar & Lounge was still underway, but not yet finalized (as of April 22).

Brian King, a partner in the Garrison, had not returned a call by press time.

Mrs. Smith said she and her husband “made the commitment to retire in September [last year], before spring. Pete and I reached a point where we don’t have the energy to commit to another season.”

She said that closing now also gives their employees the chance to find other jobs before the summer season gets started.

Mr. Smith was operating the Garrison as one of its partners in 1968 when the opportunity came up to buy the East Cove at auction, said Mrs. Smith. Mr. Smith ran both businesses for years, and Mrs. Smith became part of the restaurant in 1970.

The Smiths plan to spend more time as grandparents with their grandson, and take a couple of trips, Mrs. Smith said.
